  Going to Church Again This Morning

  the pastor who i knew a few years ago is comming from wva to preach today and i though it would be nice to talk to him again.

  the religion doesn't do anything for me but i sometimes like meeting some of the people there.. i hate wearing a tie though, it reminds me so much of all those years years at the kh.

  at least i won't have to give a talk and conduct the wt study.. ken p..

  That reminds me of the meeting I (UBM) had with an elder. He was there with 1 long time publisher (MIL) and potentially new convert (My Husband) This elder is supposed to be the "the best" ! most respected etc. Things were plugging along until the INSTANT I got out the "Stay Alive til 75" article to read from prefacing with the comment that there is so much printed stuff out there AGAINST their religion - that I wanted to make sure I was only reading and studying OFFICIAL WT MATERIAL. My question was about shunning. If in 1974 a JW refused to push that date as the "good news" and was df'd over it - lost his family, friends, possibly business too - came close to being suicidal etc - all not so unfamiliar to many on this board - if in 1976, or soon after when it was decided that maybe the world didn't end, would they go find this person and re-unite their family, put their life back together? Would they feel any responsibility? He danced a bit, then stood up and ended the visit conveying the idea "the organization is more important than the truth". MIL smiling properly follows him out. Right after that I was deemed a spiritual danger and to be slept with using extreme caution. MIL had to move out of province. :-( Didn't know anything about cults back then BUT I DO NOW!!! CULTS SUCK !!!

  grandparents day in latest Awake!

  there is a short experience of a young sister who said: "we don't celebrate granparents day".

  what is the basis for this conclusion?

  I think Almost has it right - from a non-JW point of view - the WT has managed to list all the days/reasons/ family/loved ones could possible get together or create some kind of tradition and turn it into something "evil". Something that would get their god ANGRY and JEALOUS. The less time spent with non-Jws, family or otherwise, the better. It is also an excellent way of keeping "estranged" family members away. What if a heart-felt mother's day card arrives out of the blue from a df'd daughter/or the other way round for a birthday, and if it opened the door to forgiveness, love, any type of dialogue. That could be dangerous for WT. CULTS SUCK !!

  JW Weddings

  at every jw wedding i ever went to, the celebrant has always said without fail that "the bride and groom have requested that no rice or confetti be thrown".. is this spiel used everywhere?

  is it actually a request of the bride and groom, or is it just bombastically imposed by the elders (i.e.

  a lie)?.

  ah - that clinking of glasses thing. I will never forget during my first JW wedding experience - I wanted to know why clinking and toasting etc was SO BAD! this is what i was told with a STRAIGHT FACE - that in the old days, they would clink the glasses to wake the dead spirits. I nearly died with laughter inside - SO THATS WHY YOU DON'T DO IT NOW? cause you're afraid that it might work even tho you wouldn't be doing it on purpose? OMG. Little did I know at the time that this insanity would become part of MY marriage! ( I'm a UBM by late conversion ) wp

  list allowable things with "pagan" origins here

  i'm interested in developing a list of things jws are allowed to do that have "pagan" or otherwise "evil" origins in the eyes of the wts.

  what types of things are you aware of?

  so far i've got...... red lip stick (allegedly invented to distinguish prostitutes from non-prostitutes).

  i keep reading posts from members that make referrence to going to a meeting or going out in service..... holy crap?!?!?

  what percentage of the people here still actually consider themselves as witnesses?????

  , instead I will use my God given brain and make a judgement call about the evil "internet" all on my very own. To say we shouldn't draw a conclusion until we have seen it ourselves is naive at best if you have spent even one day here reading the human wreckage left in the wake of "apostates". I don't know how many times I've heard this from a JW esp my own husband and how frustrated it makes me feel. I'd love to sit thru a WT study at a Kingdom hall with Blondie's comments and be allowed to comment. Just as I'd love to sit thru a "knocking" documentary with a room full of JWs armed with old WT and common sense. Either way - cult is cult, and there is no light in darkness. wp p.s. If I could format, I would've crossed out the substituted words, not delete them.

  i wrote most of this in response to drew sagan, in a thread that wasn't really about this issue.

  when i read back over it, i figured it need a thread of its own.. the first part of the puzzle is in appendix 1d of the nwt reference bible.

  they list all "237 places where the name jehovah occurs in the main text of the new world translation of the christian greek scriptures.

  Auld Soul love your posts. and my favourite J reference that the WT uses for their footnote in 1 Thes 4:16 when PROVING that Jesus is Michael ... because the Lord* Himself will descend from heaven with a commanding, call with an archangel's voice.... the footnote on the CD Lord = Jehovah (J reference) I have that huge, detailed online book with all the references, instances of the tetramagaton (sp) fascinating. If I were a JW, this info would get me thinking. NWT = Pure pickin & choosin interpretation wp
